Britcent English - 2 expressions

It's been quite humid the last couple of days.

It's maybe a tiny bit similar to what the weather is like in Korea.

It gets very humid. Apart from that, I'm okay.

We've had some lightning in London at least.

The rumble of thunder.

That was frightening.

But it breaks up the monotony of lockdown life.

We're still sort of in a lockdown.

I suppose when kind of coming out of lockdown, i'm still actiong as if we are in lockdown.

Which is British schools and paying particular attention to the different kinds of British schools in the educations ystem.

this could be a trickey question, but i am confident that you have the answer.

That means education that we must do that we must undergo when we were about five years old.

When we are 11, we usually go to secondary school.

I think you went to what we would call a Public school.

What would you say are the general perceptions or general stereotypes about the different kinds of school in Britian.

We have quite a strong perception of the different kinds of school that we have.

The perception of state schools was biassed in a negative way.

State schools are seen by private school people as inherently inferior.

Along with state schools, there is also prejudice and inequality in terms of quality.

They have beliefs about which state school is better than which other state school.

Conservative governments tend to be supportive of private and independent schools mainly.

So there's a tendency for them to not properly fund state schools.

or certainly not offer the same kind of support that they offer to private schools.

Many students are expelled from the school sent out to the school for bad behaviour,

It's very hard to give a kind of general judgment about such schools because they really do vary from school to school.

State schools vary dramatically.

There are some private schools which are not so well known and are farily similar to state schools in terms of their history.

Although they're considered very important, they're not nearly as important as they are in South Korea.

Carry on with the previous point.

The emphasis on extra learning after school or going to an academy or having a tutor in South Korea, it happens to a much greater extent than it does in the UK.

I'd be interested to hear some comments about this from any listeners, which is I've heard that

I've heard that because of the recent, relatively recent rapid development of South Korea, turning into an advanced country with an advanced economy, a huge amount of weight has been put on education, the benefits of education.

As it's such a competitive society, you of course, or parents, or course, feel like their children need to be better educated than other children in order to compete and succeed and have a good job.

We"ve neglected I think, the education that we have not to say.

It's not something that people were putting a huge amount of attention on.

Many people coast through school, their parents don't put them under too much pressure.

What's your perspective on all of that?

I thinkt that alos, from what I have heard in South Korean culture.

There is mush more of an emphasis and a focus on education and the importance of it.

Our rankings have slipped.

There's a different perception of that.

That it's kind of generally not always considered a good thing to have a vocation instead of further education.

So that's been something that's been very contentious, very controversial.

There are free schools so they can basically do what they want in terms of the ideas behind the school.

There are definitely some good things, but I think It's always interesting to see how it compares to the Korean sytem.

I flourishing.

Whereas if I do really well, then I flourish.
