This is an extract of some passages from the book The Freedom Writers Diary and it's translated by myself into Korean for my English studying.
When I was asked to write the foreword to The Freedom Writers Diary, I must say I was extremely honored and proud, but at the same time amazed by how many wonderful things can happen in such a short time.
- The Freedom Writers Diary 서문을 쓰는것을 제의받았을 때, 정말 영광이고 자랑스러웠다, 동시에 그 짧은 시간안에 얼마나 많은 놀라운 일이 벌어질 수 있는지에 대해 놀라기도 했다.
I met the students of Wilson High School in March 1996, when thanks to their dedication, effort, and will, they invited my parents, Mirna (my best friend from Bosnia, who was living with me at the time) and myself to come to the city of Long Beach, California.
- 1996년 3월 Wilson High Schoo 학생들을 만났을 때, 그들의 헌신, 노력, 의지에 감사할 때-, 그들은 우리 부모님, 당시에 나와 함께 살고 있었던 나의 가장 친한 친구인 보스니아 출신 Mirna 그리고 나를 켈리포니아 롱비치 도시에 초대했다.
When I met them, I was touched by their warmth and kindness. They were teenagers just like me, and like all young people all over the world, they have an amazing potential to grow into truly great people, leaders, ones who will inspire others.
- 그들을 만났을 때 이들의 따뜻함과 친절함에 감동했다. 이들은 세상 모든 어린 사람들처럼 나와 같은 10대 였고, 진실로 훌룽한 사람, 리더 그리고 다른이들에게 영감을 줄 누군가로 자랄 놀라운 잠재력을 가졌다.
These students and their teachers, Erin Gruwell, chose to read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, my own book, Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo (and many other books), and were inspired to start writing their own diaries.
- 이 학생들과 담임선생님인 Erin Gruwell은 어린 소녀의 일기 '안네 프랑크', 나의 Sarajevo에서 유년시절을 기록한 책 Zlata's Diary 를 읽기로 하였고, 이것은 그들만의 일기를 쓰기 시작하는데 영감을 주었다.
They had organized themselves and chose to do something different, something memorable, something powerful and humane.
- 이들은 다르고 기억에 남을 만한, 강력하고 인도적인 것을 하기로 했고 이것을 그들 스스로 구성해 나갔다.
They chose to rid themselves of doing things the easy way, the way they've always been done, and chose to write, to create, to fight stereotypes, and live up to the name of true Freedom Writers.
- 이들은 이들 스스로 그동안 해 왔던 쉬운 길을 벗어나 글을 쓰고 창작하고 선입견과 맞서 싸우며 진정한 Freedom Writers로 거듭나는 길을 택했다.
I am immensely proud and happy to have had a chance to meet them and to play some role in their "Growth" as human beings.
